KAIZN

Join us on our journey towards a better, more connected scientific community. Let's innovate together, and make a positive impact on the world of science and medicine.

who we are

enhancing
science with
open-source
solutions

At KAIZN, we are Jan Piotraschke and Jan-Luca Klees, two realists dedicated to simplifying research and fostering continuous improvement, inspired by the Japanese concept of "kaizen."

We develop highly usable open-source software and hardware solutions that streamline existing processes, promote collaboration, and support researchers in their daily work. Our aim is to make scientific research more efficient, enjoyable, and accessible, ultimately leading to a more balanced life for those involved.

Our team values clarity, directness, respect, and personal growth. We encourage each member to become the healthiest and strongest version of themselves, focusing on self-guidance and responsibility for their results. Our distributed team works remotely, embracing flexibility and autonomy in the pursuit of our mission.

Our design philosophy is inspired by Zen gardens, emphasizing simplicity and clarity. We believe that a minimalist approach allows us to create streamlined solutions that seamlessly integrate with researchers' workflows. By embodying the principles of kaizen and Zen aesthetics.

We strive to transform the world of scientific research.

what we do

lucy

data streaming

Lucy is a research project that creates synthetic big data of tissue behavior using a physics engine. It all started with Jan's bachelor thesis, where we developed a exceptionally user-friendly interface for his complex simulation. We realized that there was a need for this type of software in the scientific community, and Lucy was born.

Lucy has evolved beyond recognition since then and will get released soon.

voy

project management

Our second software project, Voy, was developed in response to the challenges of managing a team of medical researchers. The data entry staff responsible for that was using ineffective tools like spreadsheets and post-it notes to communicate open tasks with the medical researchers. With Voy, a ticketing system at it's core, we were able centralize these tasks, enabling real collaboration for the first time, while staying GDPR compliant.

Currently, the first version of Voy, Ryoan-ji, is available for use and named after the renowned rock garden in Kyoto.

dejima

data marketplace

Dejima is our vision of an innovative marketplace revolutionizing the way data is bought and sold. Our platform empowers scientists, researchers, and businesses to monetize their valuable data sets, unlocking new revenue streams while fueling groundbreaking discoveries.

By connecting data creators with data consumers, Dejima fosters collaboration, accelerates research, and promotes the exchange of high-quality datasets across various industries. All while prioritizing data privacy and compliance.

the architects

jan piotraschke

scientist, co-founder

As a computational physicist, I am always seeking out new and innovative methods for gaining insights into the dynamic states of tissues and their underlying mechanisms. With my passion for science, I spend many hours poring over the latest research and tinkering with complex simulations, always pushing the boundaries of what's possible.

Beyond my work, I am intrigued by the historical aspect of cultural diversity and Japanese zen gardens. I find these spaces calming and inspiring, and enjoy exploring the intricate designs and rich history they offer.

jan-luca klees

web development specialist, co-founder

I started out as a self-taught web developer, and over time, I've acquired a wide range of skills, that now enable me to handle everything technical within our organization.

I am dedicated to creating practical solutions that meet the real-world needs of our users. By taking a mindful approach to development, I ensure that our applications are built with longevity in mind.

In my free time, I enjoy hiking with my wife and exploring Japanese culture, as well as repairing and fixing things around the house.
